Inside the Nordic oats
Oats are a cereal plant with a loose, branched cluster of florets. When ready to be harvested, oats turn into beautiful golden yellow color. Usually, oats are cultivated in a cooler climate – for example in Finland, Northern Europe. Oats are one of the healthiest grains on earth. After oat groats are dehulled, they have three parts in the edible grain:
The Bran of Oats
The outer layer is called the bran which protects the seed and is rich in both soluble and insoluble fibre. The bran contains vitamins, minerals and is rich in good quality plant protein. Phytochemical, such as avenanthramides and flavonoids, are concentrated in outer bran layers. Researchers are interested in these substances as they have been shown to have a variety of health effects in studies.
The Germ of Oats
The core is called the germ which nourishes the seed and contains antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fat. Oats contain more soluble fibre than any other grain. They have a special soluble fibre component, beta-glucan, concentrated in the bran layer. When the bran is left on, the grain can be called whole grain.
Boost your product marketing with EU-approved health claims of Oats
Oats’ beta-glucan helps to lower cholesterol. Also, with beta-glucan, it is easier to maintain a normal healthy digestive system and to balance blood sugar levels. These EU-approved health claims will boost your product marketing. Claims can be used for foods which provide at least 1 g of oat beta glucan per quantified portion. In addition to that, information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of oat beta-glucan.

"Beta-glucan forms a viscous solution which moves very slowly in the digestive system and releases energy."
Gut-friendly oats keep the stomach full longer, providing satiety and help in weight watching. The fats in oats are relatively healthy. Oats have high fat content (6-10 %) compared to other cereals and fatty acid composition is very beneficial. Soluble fibre also slows down the absorption of glucose. Thanks to this there are no unpleasant highs and lows in blood sugar. Soluble fibres also inhibit the reabsorption of bile from the intestine which in turn increases the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol and thus reduces circulating (LDL) cholesterol concentrations.
