Oat Quality Factors
The quality of Finnish oats is rooted in expertise and ideal growing conditions.
Finnish oats are perfect for food production
Finnish oats are ideal for milling and food production thanks to their excellent grain properties. Finnish oat varieties are known for their larger kernel size, which results in higher yields and less waste during milling. Their low husk content makes Finnish oats more efficient to process, while the light-yellow color is ideal for producing oat flakes and groats. With a hectoliter weight of 57–58 kilograms, which is higher than many European oats, Finnish oats yield more usable product for processing.
Local farmers ensure oat quality
Our oats owe their superior quality to the expertise of local farmers and Finland’s ideal growing conditions. Farmers carefully select the oat varieties best suited to the Finnish climate, ensuring strong growth and large crops. Finland’s growing season provides enough rainfall for oats to grow. As a resilient grain, oats thrive in a wide range of soil types across the country. Well-planned nutrient management guarantees both higher harvests and top-quality oats.

High Standards for quality control
At every stage of the oat production process, quality is carefully monitored. Each truckload is sampled to check for moisture, protein, color, and kernel size, as well as impurities such as debris. To meet strict EU regulations, mycotoxin levels are also tested. Finnish oats are stored based on their quality and are typically used within a year. Finnish farmers receive quality bonuses for top-quality oats, ensuring that only the best oats make it into food production.

Large-scale oat production improves quality
Finland cultivates approximately 330,000 hectares of oats annually, producing around 1 million tons each year. Oats are the second most widely grown crop in Finland, after barley. As a staple of Finnish daily nutrition, oats are in high demand, fostering continuous interest in oat cultivation. This demand drives farmers to improve their expertise and increase the cultivated area. This, in turn, ensures a reliable supply of oats, even during less favourable harvest years.

Global demand for Finnish oats
Finnish oats are highly regarded worldwide for their exceptional quality. Approximately 30–40% of Finland’s annual oat harvest is exported, with a primary focus on European markets. Raisio has been the leading oat producer in Finland, specializing in gluten-free oats for over 20 years. As global demand for oat-based and gluten-free products grows, our oat production continues to meet the needs of European food manufacturers.
